Pablo Manga

Pablo Manga makes perceptually charged and color-driven geometric abstractions.  He is known for his signature use of clear and colored semi-transparent packing tape as a painting medium, which he began using two decades ago when living and working in Mexico City.  Manga continues to work with tape while expanding his practice into acrylics, printmaking and drawing.

Manga’s recent paintings allude to dance floor liberation, democratic society, and the interconnection of all living things.  His work is indebted to meditation practice, the shimmering radiance of nature, and the innumerable pleasures of a body in motion.  These all inspire Manga’s focus on perception in an embodied experience of the world, ever in the flux of becoming.

Originally from Cambridge, Massachusetts, Manga is a self-taught artist who holds degrees in philosophy and law from UC Berkeley.  He has shown widely in the San Francisco Bay Area, including at Galería de la Raza, Southern Exposure, Root Division, and the de Young Museum, as well as in New York, Miami, and in four solo shows at Farm Projects.  He was awarded a parent artist residency at Kala Art Institute, and attended a fellowship residency at Winslow House Project.  His work is in the collections of Google and CIC (Cambridge Innovation Center).  Manga lives and works in Oakland, California.
