Farm Projects is pleased to present Rest, a solo exhibition of sculpture by Janice Redman, on view September 26 through October 12, 2026.

Redman's sculpture is rooted in everyday experience and her personal history. Drawing on her memories of her seamstress and lacemaker mother, her father who restored antique clocks, and other family members worked in the wool mills and steel industry, she works intuitively and often repetitively with domestic objects, treating the act of making as a personal ritual.

Rest takes its title from the condition at the center of Redman's practice: waiting. For Redman, making a sculpture begins in obsessive, fully committed attention, that then, in some cases, simply stops. In those moments, Redman has learned not to force the work, trusting the right idea to emerge in its own time.

That trust operates across years. Much of Redman's work has spent long stretches sitting quietly on her studio shelves, sometimes for five, ten, or thirty years before she brings it back into conversation with the work she is actively making.

"It is a strange, long-winded process," she says."I have to wait, and it usually tells me,eventually. But it takes a lot of patience and trust."

This exhibition arrives after a season that asked Redman to practice that patience in her own body. Early this summer, an unexpected medical issue required her to rest for eleven weeks. That period of reflection brought forth this exhibition which is shaped as much by pause as by production, offering breathing room to see what has been made and to carry it forward in new and ongoing directions.

For the October 4 artist talk, Redman will be joined by writer and naturalist Elizabeth Bradfield, her longtimefriend, neighbor, and studio companion. Bradfield has worked alongside Redman in the studio nearly every week since 2013, and has written closely about Redman's patience and her way of letting each piece find its own form on its own time: "As much as Janice's sculptures are about wrapping or hiding, her process is one of uncovering and discovery."

"My work,” Redman says,“is rooted in my everyday experience and my personal history. My mother was a seamstress and a lace maker; my father restored antique clocks, working in a small shed at the bottom of the garden. The rest of my family has worked in the wool mills or steel industry, making tools. So I come from a family of "makers," and that is what I do: I make things. Using domestic objects I have an intimate connection to, I work intuitively and, in many cases, repetitively. The act of making becomes a personal ritual, a process of revealing that which lies beneath the surface of the everyday."

Janice Redman lives in Truro, MA with her family, chickens, and large vegetable garden.
