Farm Projects is pleased to present Total Calm, an exhibition of new sculpture and paintings by Godeleine de Rosamel. In her second exhibition at the gallery, the artist presents works that combine, recombine, and assemble pieces that were never meant to be together.
Created primarily in Wellfleet, the work on view begins with disparate ceramic elements left over from earlier projects, broken or unfinished. Combined together, these ceramic pieces are glazed together into new configurations, often through a process of several firings. The glaze melts in the kiln and binds each composition as it cools, the results hold both intention and accident: forms that cohere through balance rather than plan.
New to this body of work are what the artist calls her geometrical pieces, hard edged constructions that bring the artist’s ceramic work together with wood, metal, wire, and concrete – all fragments of human made objects collected from the beaches and then bonded to pre-existing ceramic elements.
A group of new paintings extends the same vocabulary onto flat surfaces. In them, the fragments and stacked forms of the sculptures reappear as layered compositions of color and gesture, built up, dissolved, and reassembled in paint. Seen together, the two bodies of work describe a single practice of patient recombination that speaks to the similarly constant reconstitution the Cape Cod shoreline.
Of the title, the artist describes: “Total calm is how I feel sometimes in my studio, when I’m in the flow. But mostly it is what all these fragments of human-made objects, polished and softened by the sea, inspire in me.”
About the Artist Godeleine de Rosamel is a French artist who divides her time between Los Angeles and Wellfleet. Born in Lille, France, in 1968, de Rosamel attended the Ecole de Recherche Graphique (ERG) in Brussels, Belgium, where she graduated with a fine arts degree and began a career as a children’s book illustrator. Her illustrations have been featured in a number of books in France and Belgium. In 2001, she moved to Los Angeles and continued her illustration practice until she turned to ceramic sculpture, first exhibiting in a group show at Giant Robot in Los Angeles in 2014. Her practice now spans sculpture, painting, and drawing. Total Calm follows Field Trip, her 2024 exhibition at Farm Projects, and Late Bloomers, her 2026 solo exhibition at Chefas Projects in Portland, Oregon.
